More from that night...

D&D Photos - November 2006

These were a long time coming.

Interest vs. Committment

Back to old school

After finishing my varsity exams in May 2006, this is the first time that I am back to actually doing / pretending to study.

I have the worst temperament when it comes to studying - but I actually quite like the discursive stuff that I am reading on in Performance Management - ACCA paper 3.3

I am doing self-study so the results in July will be interesting :)

So you think you can be a Singapore citizen

That is lame. But nonetheless, Singapore now allows you to see whether an individual qualifies for PR or Citizenship.

My results:

The result of your assessment is :

You are eligible for Singapore Citizenship based on the information you have provided. Please click to download the application form . The list of documents needed for a Singapore Citizenship application can also be viewed here .

Note: Do not ask me about the weird signal light image; think Singapore is heavily influenced by the USA terror warning levels.

And it is called the Naturalisation Eligibility Tool. WTH? A simpler name might have done but Singapore's addiction to acronyms must have persuaded them - NET.

Face down

The acoustic version is better. However, I could not see a good version on Youtube. This is the official MTV video. The lyrics for your reading/singing pleasure:

One look puts the rhythm in my head.
Still I'll never understand why you hang around.
I see what's going down.

Cover up with makeup in the mirror,
Tell yourself it's never gonna happen again.
You cry alone and then he swears he loves you

Do you feel like a man when you push her around?
Do you feel better now as she falls to the ground?
Well, I'll tell you my friend, one day this world's going to end
As your lies crumble down, a new life she has found.

A pebble in the water makes a ripple effect;
Every action in this world will bear a consequence.
If you wade around forever you will surely drown.
I see what's going down.
I see the way you go and say you're right again,
say your right again
heed my lecture

Do you feel like a man when you push her around?
Do you feel better now as she falls to the ground?
Well, I'll tell you my friend, one day this world's going to end
as your lies crumble down, a new life she has.

One day she will tell you that she has had enough.
It's coming round again.(2)

Do you feel like a man when you push her around?
Do you feel better now as she falls to the ground?
Well, I'll tell you my friend, one day this world's going to end
As your lies crumble down, a new life she has

Face down in the dirt she says "this doesn't hurt"

1-1

India have squared the series with the final match on Saturday being a virtual final.

Positives for Lanka was Bandara's and Fernando's medicore performance with the ball; and the recovery by Dilshan and Arnold. Negatives - too many start and stops with wickets falling in bundles and the worrying collapses at the beginning.

Positives for India is that their fielding improved - overnight. Batting lived upto its expectations especially with Dhoni and Ganguly continuing their rich vein of form; Dravid too is back in the runs. And the man-of-the-match - Zaheer Khan has justified his comeback and selection into the World Cup squad with todays five. Agarka proved that he too could be frontline or a good replacement.

Where does this all lead to - a cracker on Saturday.

Employee Benefits

My guess

So India is chasing 231 and were looking good at 82 for 2 with Yuvraj and Ganguly looking set. They have just lost Yuvraj and suddenly we are one more wicket away to get into a good position. It is still even-steven and this is thanks to our middle order, mainly Dilshan and Arnold, who played really well allowing us to recover from 6 for 3 in the fifth over, and 95 for 3 midway through the innings. All in all, while both India and Lanka would like to win, the scenarios created for both teams will go a long way in helping in the World Cup.

Jeez. Sound like one of those hypocritical Australian players...

Lanka's World Cup squad

This would be my squad of 15 for the World Cup 2007.

1. Sanath Jayasuriya
2. Mahela Jayawardena
3. Kumar Sangakkara
4. Chaminda Vaas
5. Muttiah Muralitharan
6. Malinga Bandara
7. Tilekaratne Dilshan
8. Upul Tharanga
9. Lasith Malinga
10. Marvan Attapattu
11. Nuwan Zoysa
12. Dilhara Fernando
13. Farveez Mahroof
14. Upul Chandhana
15. Russel Arnold

The core team, barring injuries and the quandary between playing extra seamer/spinner and/or a bat, would be:

1. Upul Tharanga
2. Sanath Jayasuriya
3. Kumar Sangakkara (Wicketkeeper/Vice Captain)
4. Mahela Jayawardena (Captain)
5. Marvan Attapattu
5. Tilekaratne Dilshan
6. Chaminda Vaas
7. Lasith Malinga
8. Muttiah Muralitharan

The last three spots could be then decided as per match requirements.

You have to believe

10.50pm England's dressing erupts into celebration as the announcement comes through confirming that they have won this match by 34 runs and with it the CB Series 2-0.

Courtesy of Cricinfo.com

Well, you have to believe. England have defeated Australia and some splendid efforts that made it possible but three have been standout

Liam Plunkett - Never thought I would say this, but he made a huge difference. Not only in the last match but ever since he got Gilchrist out first-ball in the preliminary round match to start the winning streak, he has delivered. Has been expensive but his two-wicket over after the first rain break in the Aussie innings, sealed their faith!

Andrew Flintoff - Just finding his feet with the bat but has been exceptional with the ball. And heck, he can be captain too - showing how much of this is a team game.

Paul Collingwood - How massive is this fella? If only his double-hundred had had been in a winning effort, England would have had a different summer. He had a slump but he regained his form and has helped England to leave Australia with a lot of faith. My player of the series.

What a great day! Now, till Wednesday for the third ODI between Lanka and India. My money is on Lanka =)

Finger-biting contest

Lanka won; firstly, I would like to present my middle finger to Arun Lal and the other South-Asian commentator. They wrote Lanka off at the end of the first innings; and after Mahroof got us two wickets, and Ganguly and Tendulkar in full flow, they were "sort of" vindicated but their comments showed how little they understood about the game. Seriously pathetic.

Anyways, we applied our chokehold game with the spinners; and credit to Mahroof and the Slinger-Malinga. Dhoni was out first-ball off a perfect in-swinging yorker but it was a no-ball! Eventually, he played well for his 49 - till he was at the crease India was only one shot away.

In the end, some splendid ground-fielding and I think some amazing captaincy too.

And thank you, Sangakkara - he was the difference and played a chanceless innings!

And also a special note to Arun Lal - we made India bat 50 overs, did not get them all-out and still won =)

The Sangakkara Show

Lanka has finished on 257-8 at Rajkot. Sangakkara resurrected the innings from 58-4. Is it enough? It should set-up a good game but Malinga will have to bowl well first-up and blast out a couple of wickets quickly. The other huge positive for SL was Dilshan; played well for a fifty and got out to a peach of a ball. Munaf Patel continued to impress and had his career best figures of 4-49; however, he could have had his fiver if not for dropped catches off his own bowling.

Play to resume in 40 mins. Enough time to catch Lost 307 - Not in Portland =)

The Last King of Scotland

If you have to watch one movie for this year, look no further.

I watched it; the cast is amazing and Forest Whitaker can never be praised enough for playing the role of a dictator who was charming, magnetic and murderous.

'Nuff said.

I told you so...

The poms have done it. Finally, if only the Barmy Army had hung around at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. For eleven years, Australia had only lost once while batting first and yet, against all odds, England pulled out a magnificent win.

After the fantastic turnaround in the field led by Collingwood's stunning catch, England could not be stopped; not even after they were 15 for 3.

An unpredictable game and I saw this coming; think England can finish it off in the second. I still feel that the team composition is poor - Plunkett continues to be a weak link. However, for now, England would do well not push the Aussies hard, use the momentum and go to the World Cup with some confidence.

Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD)

Mutual assured destruction (MAD) is a doctrine of military strategy in which a full-scale use of nuclear weapons by one of two opposing sides would effectively result in the destruction of both the attacker and the defender. It is based on the theory of deterrence according to which the deployment of strong weapons is essential to threaten the enemy in order to prevent the use of the very same weapons. The strategy is effectively a form of Nash Equilibrium, in which both sides are attempting to avoid their worst possible outcome — nuclear annihilation.

Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mutual_assured_destruction

A very simple theory but powerful only because it holds true; I sure hope so because trouble is brewing in the Middle East with Washington threatening Iran.

Argh! Rain

Rain robbed us of a potentially amazing set-up at the Eden in Culcutta.

To be fair, it was even steven when it was called off. Lanka was rolling along at 5.5 runs-per-over in 18 or so overs. More importantly, Jayasuriya was on 61 (63 balls) and a massive innings looking ominous.

However, India had got 3 big wickets and another wicket then would have put us under immense pressure. And then, Lanka would probably have to deal with the dew if we did have bowled second.

All in all, I think Lanka will go back the happier side since Jayasuriya got a start; India will wish to analyse their bowling. The spearhead, Zaheer Khan and the upcoming S Sreesanth came in for some tap. The huge plus was Munaf Patel - continued to impress.

This sets up for the match on Sunday @ Rajkot. I am hoping I will find some place to watch it.

What is the...

Questions asked of graduates applying for jobs seem to be getting funkier. I applied for a whole load of jobs time time, last year but never did I come across this. I was asked weird ones - the one that I think that I enjoyed answering was "When did I lose my temper last?" and in that same interview, I was asked if "I would accept an assignment to be based in Iraq...". The rest of the panel stopped the slightly sensitive topic; it was a fun panel but they felt they had crossed the line since I was muslim and Iraq. I was unmoved; but I guess I did have said yes, even though the truth is that Iraq is not accessible.

Getting back to the questions:

What is the most funniest or embarrassing thing that has happened to you?

I do not think this is the most embarrassing thing ever but it was when I was in secondary school. I used to buy my food and drinks from the canteen and sit on a ledge to enjoy my snack. Of course, Sri Lanka has crows. And like lots of them. Anyways, an adventurous one flew down and swooped on my snack; caught off-guard and basic gut instincts, I tried to fend it off. In the process, I was scratched. He had just missed my eye; but of course, my immature friends decided to make the best of this opportunity convinced me that the scratch could still have dire consequences. Believing the smhucks, I visited a doctor. He dismissed me thinking I was nuts. To top it off, I was rumoured to have contracted "crowsythis" - do not contest me on the spelling.

What is the biggest risk you have taken?

Risk involves uncertainty. Of course, this one is easy since we always take calculated risks. The easiest was the one that involved starting my degree in NUS, giving up a full-time job and knowing that I did have to settle outside of Sri Lanka for some time to come. The rest is history. In hindsight, it has its ups and downs but given that I spent a year in the States and landed a job in StanChart makes this a definitely positive thing.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Wow. These questions are hard. Sometimes, I think they are asked to measure how well we can relate; to be fair, if asked face-to-face, this might be easier (I think). Of course, it could also measure how a candidate fares in opening up, ability to actually reveal sometimes sensitive info. and so on.

An incident I froze almost completely was when I was asked to describe the life of a stapler. I was asked to start and not stop until instructed. I started and froze twice. I was not called back for the second interview. No suprise there.

Will Singapore follow suit?

I cannot say that I did not see this coming. I have always thought with the rise in electronic devices, a ban, while crossing the roads that is probably logical.

New York To Ban iPods When Crossing The Street

Boston (eCanadaNow) - New York Senator Carl Kruger wants to make it a law that anyone who crosses the street listing to an iPod of talking on a cell phone would face a $100 fine.

Kruger stated that 3 pedestrians in his Brooklyn district have been killed since September when trying to cross the street in heavy traffic because they were distracted by their electronic device whether it be a cell phone or an iPod.

Kruger says that he will introduce to legislation on Wednesday a bill to ban the use of any electronic gadgets when crossing the street. These include video games, iPods, Blackberry devices, cell phones, etc.

Kruger states that the electronic gadgets are “reaching the point where it is becoming not only an endemic but it is creating an atmosphere where we have a major public safety crisis at hand.”

The Sri Lanka team has undergone a big change in attitude since the last time we toured India for a bilateral series, nearly 15 months ago. The focus of the team has become more honed and we have made great progress in terms of fitness, mental aptitude and diversifying our skills repertoire.

The laws of the game have also changed since we last toured. Gone are the Super Sub regulations, an innovation that ensured sides were picked in the hope of winning the toss and maximising the advantage of the one Super Sub. The Power Plays, though, which have added to the pace of the game, remain.

The Super Sub and Power Play rules had just come into ODI cricket during that tour and we were then in the process of experimenting and actually getting used to them. What was confusing then has become much clearer now as we embark on the final series before the much-awaited World Cup.

The first two ODIs of this series promise to burden the teams with a bit more pressure than actually winning the games. This is because these are the last two games that either side has to try out players for the one or two spots up for grabs before the ICC deadline of February 13 for the announcement of the final squads.

The selectors, coaches and captains will all be focused on making sure that the playing combinations are those that will be taken to the World Cup. The players will carry into the games that much more anticipation and hope of performing to be included in the final 15s. Add to this the intense scrutiny of the media analysing and picking apart the pros and cons of the various combinations that are played and there is definitely heightened pressure in the build-up.

But the main responsibility of the Sri Lanka team is to make sure that we always try and maintain control of our core processes. Our physical preparation in terms of fitness and skill work should be practiced with the same excellent standards that we have set for ourselves.

Indeed, one factor behind our recent resurgence has been the acceptance by all individual players of the need to be constantly challenged at practice. Each practice session has been an exercise in purpose. There is something specific to be achieved from each and every fielding, batting or bowling drill. Each task is approached with the specific objective of getting better.

Our focus mentally has to be on making sure that we think of this series as a separate entity to the World Cup: a series that we are here to win, a series which gives us another opportunity to build confidence on and progress onwards towards building a winning team.

The Indians are always a tough side to play at home. Yet, of late, they have been a little unsettled and have lacked a unified, collective focus. The form of their core players has been in question and has provided opposition sides a chink in the armour to exploit.

And yet in the past month they have shown that they are prepared to put in match-winning performances when asked of them, as was seen in their recent series versus the West Indies. The fanatical crowd support that they enjoy at home seems to fuel the enthusiasm and ego, propelling them to score a full 40-50 runs more than they gather overseas.

Our sole practice match - even though not against the best opposition - was one in which we made sure that we kept our winning ways intact. Against a young, raw, opposition we stuck to our strategies and focused on our processes. Once in control, we made sure that there was never a moment in which we relaxed or relented.

The new additions to our side, Nuwan Kulasekera and Nuwan Zoysa, showed that they were hungry for international cricket by putting in strong bowling performances, the kind they will need to maintain consistently to be pushing for selection from here on.

In the absence of Muttiah Muralitharan the responsibility of being the main spinner falls on Malinga Bandara. The fact that we have on tour his main competition for a place in the form of the returning Upul Chandana creates an interesting situation that promises to spur both players to put in improved performances.

Bandara has the attitude, variation and belief that is often seen in players that have been exposed to intense levels of competition both in domestic and international cricket. His year on the sidelines of this side has hardened his resolve and his exposure to county cricket with Gloucestershire has broadened his thinking.

'In the absence of Muttiah Muralitharan the responsibility of being the main spinner falls on Malinga Bandara' © Getty Images

Chandana, through his performances in domestic cricket and with the A team, has shown that he is determined to not accept half measures in his quest to regain his place in the national side. His value lies not only in his bowling but in his batting. Chandana has streamlined his batting technique. The flamboyance and risk-taking of his early days has been compartmentalised to be drawn upon only in times of dire need. Instead, he is a player who now puts value on his wicket and has accepted the need of spending proper time at the crease in order to accumulate runs. Both Bandara and Chandana will become key in balancing our bowling and batting line-ups.

Our core batting lie-up has remained intact for a while but the first two games will offer up the opportunity for Tillakaratne Dilshan, Russel Arnold and Chamara Silva to, once and for all, put to rest the doubts over their ability in the middle and late middle order. Theirs is the hardest position to bat in ODI cricket. It requires players to continually adapt to different game situations and asks of them a steely resolve and an absolute belief in their own abilities to finish and win matches.

I have no doubt that they are the three most capable players in Sri Lanka to do that. The only thing they are short of is the confidence that comes with spending quality time in the middle in a match situation. There is no better situation then than the one offered in India on turning tracks, in the heat of the game, with a packed stadium full of screaming India fans wishing you nothing but ill.

As a side, we take pride in having built a culture of enjoyment, commitment and belief in which to grow. We expect nothing short of maintaining our own high standards. For us as a team these four games are not about the World Cup, they are not about the atmosphere of the grounds in India, they are not about the Indian team or its devoted legions of fans. For us, these four games are about ourselves. It is about our preparation, our own individual abilities and our firm belief that we are building towards a side capable of being the best it can be.

You are so stupid ...

You want to hear "you are so stupid joke..." This one has a horrible ending though. Only in Lanka.

Sri Lanka Blast Exhibition

At least 14 people were injured in the Sri Lankan capital on Tuesday when a bomb went off accidentally during a military exhibition marking the country's independence anniversary.

A Special Task Force commando was demonstrating the use of a grenade when it went off, PTI reported here quoting police spokesman.

The Bandaranaike International Conference Centre was packed with thousands of people when the blast occurred.

The government organized the four-day exhibition to mark Sri Lanka's 59th independence anniversary which fell on Sunday.

The military was exhibiting its fire power as well as weapons captured from the Tamil Tigers and the exhibits had been a big draw.

The poms down under...

England, so far, have had a miserable tour of Australia. However, they have managed to taste success by reaching the finals beating Australia and subsequently New Zealand (NZ).

Most observers would not give England more than an outside chance. However, I think Australia is not the same; it will be back to full-throttle but I believe England will be able to spring a suprise. Of course, the idea is to do it twice to take the cup and I have a feeling England might just do that. It is an outside shot but the game in itself is unpredictable and England will look to:

Michael Vaughn - a nothing with the bat but as captain and the ability to marshal his team.

Andrew "Freddie" Flintoff - He is due with the bat and his performance with the ball against NZ was more than enough to convince than he is the real deal.

Andrew Strauss - Phenomenal start to his career and seems to have hit a rough patch. If the old adage of form is temporary and class is permanent is true, Strauss will fire and that should carry England far.

Monty Panesar - Hats off. Give this man his due - he is going to improve and keeps turning in credible performances and I am sure he looks to make his mark down under. Again.

England's biggest quandary is in the fast bowling; Mahmood and Plunkett are rubbish. I suggest they hang on to Mahmood and bring back R Bopara. And of course, the others (basically Collingwood and Nixon) could make something happen, it should be enough to help England leave with renewed hope for the World Cup and Australia on a bit of a hinge given that they have both NZ and then the World Cup to deal with.

Use and abuse

A lot of people that I have known, and rarely that I keep in touch with, have this bad habit of use and abuse. They are so pally when they want something and then once that is achieved you will never hear from them again. This use and abuse fascinates me. Only because it seems so immature and foolish since you use the pretence of a "friendship" to achive a somewhat selfish goal and move on altogether. Of course, I think I have done this a few times myself; I have conciously tried to avoid it but... However, in the recent past, I have made it a point to only fall back on people who have been mutually fair to me and me to them. This makes it more pleasant eh?

And another thing that irritates me is how people miss the big picture! I mean, I have always focused on winning the war and not the battle. Of course, this is something I endorse/believe that works for me but I absolutely hate it when people focus on the knitty-gritty when they should be thinking much further. I had it worst when I was in the US; of course, there is a whole saga of issues but one of the things that made living with my roommates impossible was how they would simply loathe about the righteousness of things but not live upto any semblance of it. There were plenty of times that I would make the effort to make it more conducive by doing small things - like washing the unclean dishes, clearing out the garbage and so on. Of course, I am a very give-take person partly because I knew I would need them and hoped that they would come through when I did - of course, it never did and things ended up in a real mess. I probably deserved some of the things that happened to me... karma me thinks.

I am old...

And before you know it, I am already 26. Jeez. That is old eh? I wonder, that officially, in terms of still being in my first job, I have not missed the boat.

I guess it is not that bad. However, I look a lot older than I am. Being South Asian means that I am big. My lack of exercise and indulging in fatty foods means that my stature is a lot bigger than most 26 year old's. In any case, I have been called "Uncle" several times already. However, it, of course, has its plusses as well - I intimidate people, I am able to get things done because I look older, I am given priority (Do not confuse this with being offerred discounts or seats on busses on account of being a senior citizen)...

In any case, I need to adopt a healthier lifestyle. I have coffee in the morning, then lunch and dinner - with fruits at the end. I have rice/curry for lunch and usually similar thingy for dinner. Might switch to Naan and some of the Ready-to-Eat stuff I bought from Mustafa's.

I watched House 312; it was very different. No meidcal mystery this time and focused on House as more of a person. I did not enjoy it but I will tolerate it if it means they move on to the similar theme of a medical mystery combined with his amazing arrognace - an unbelievable romance that is!

I just realised that being at work means it is a lot harder to meet up with buddies from school - the timings are so different. And I do not know whether it is me but I do not have work buddies whom I can hang out with... Maybe I just need to give it time and I will make new friends. I am plagued with not having the ability to make new friends and even have the amazing ability to lose them - really quickly. Well, this is becoming another ramble...

Lanka/India

Of course, on Feb 8th we kick off the four ODIs against India. Since the 6-1 trashing, Lanka has come a long way. The only noticeable blip on the radar was the Champions Trophy where we lost to a South African side whose bowling was unplayable. However, India's bowling is very playable; in fact, it is so muddled that their world-class (and this label is attached by Indians) leg spinner is also their fast bowler. OK wait... I am going into that whole Indian bashing thing again...

But, just for the record, I am prediciting a 3-1 result for Lanka. We probably will drop one because it is ODIs and hence unpredictable element. This will set us up nicely for the world cup - which is going to be next month.

And mind you, while Lanka has progressed since the 6-1 trashing, India's has recalled Ganguly. Erm. OK - see what I mean. And they also hailed the series win against West Indies as an achievement. Erm. Again... Nevermind. Once we beat them, and they get knocked out of the world cup with the minnows, everything will be normal again. Of course, by normal, I mean that Ganguly will find his house on fire and submit yet another insurance claim.

Blowing hot and cold

So a long time since my last update. Well, I am entirely free now so what better a time than to post an entry.

A lot again has happened. I went to Colombo, Sri Lanka for 12 days. I was not planning to return till late 2008 so this trip suprised me the most. It was by far mostly involving mosuqe. I, along with 10,000 other visitors for the sermons, camped there for a period of 9 days. And of the remaining 3 days, I got some shopping done, spent some time at home with my nieces and nephews. Unfortunately, I had no time to make any social calls and I felt that even amongst my "close" circle friends, time and space has led to a drift. It blows but I guess I am not going to be mentioned in a hall of fame for the manner in which I hold onto my friendships. But it takes two hands to clap, right?

And then, of course, my introvert-ness has meant more media. I have been watching The Office (the US version which makes me wonder how good the British humour will have to be to beat this). The Jim/Pam affair makes me want to cry. They are so damn made for each other and I hope they finally do make them a couple on the show.

I also have been watching Desperate Housewives and House. Those are staple and amazing; DH because everything is linked and House - well, because Hugh Lauries (a.k.a Dr Gregory House) totally owns that role. I am waiting on Lost to resume...

I have watched Blood Diamond and the Pursuit of Happyness - partly. The damned DVD skips so I am hoping that it miraculously fixes itself the next time I play it!

Job wise - I am enjoying my rotation in Reporting. It is fun to be finally seeing the things on the ground in terms of reporting. I am also waiting on starting the self-study for my ACCA; since I am doing my first exam in Dec '07, there is loads of time. I will be saying that in Dec '07 so the preceding statement is now redundant.

I played a cricket game - meaning with a leather ball. These are more infrequent than my updates. Horrendous over. I guess not playing the game and relying only on my shoulder for pace is what should motivate to stick to finance and keep watching the game. For those interested, the over was 4, 4, 4, 2, 4, 0. There were 5 full tosses. No prizes for guessing which 5.
It was still fun. I played no further part; our batsmen romped home. Not exactly romped home; it was 42 of 36 balls but some late hitting meant we got there with 7 balls to spare. I was the scorer and I really enjoy that because it allows/forces me to follow the game closely.

I am waiting on the weekend; I want to watch "The Last King of Scotland". It already is receiving rave reviews and has received awards and oscar nominations.

Well, this is all for now. I have invested in headphones. This is the real deal. Those huge ones that I always see on the MRT. I haven't opened them yet. It is a US brand and I am going to soon. Connect it to my pod and see how it works when I am travelling.

And I do not want a PDA no more. I think it would not make any sense unless it helped in work. It is too expensive. I am thinking of a new phone as soon as my Starhub comes in for renewal. Maybe even the iPod phone. Or a Sony Ericsson. The W800 is really nice and I am sure there will be some good deals by September this year - when I will have the offer to renew :)

Haiz. I wish I could go overseas again. Business or otherwise. It is so boring at times in Singapore. I have to be making some difficult decisions in the next 24 months or so... Well, that leaves me a lot to think about!
